Moosomin is a great prairie town with a strong connection to outdoor hockey. The outdoor rink and skating loop is always buzzing in the winter months and this episode captures the Moosomin outdoor hockey experience through sights and sounds of the volunteers and the people who play there.

Hillcrest Community Rink is a volunteer run rink in Whitehorse, YT. Buster Clare has taken the lead on making sure the ice is cleared and flooded each morning using a technique he learned growing up in Dawson City. The rink is tucked into the trees in the middle of the Hillcrest neighbourhood and it is always buzzing with activity.

The prairies are home to many outdoor rinks, but the rink on Beaver Creek Farms is a special one. Darryl Wiebe is continuing a family tradition of creating an outdoor rink for family and friends. With help from cousin Andrew Doerksen, a majestic rink sits alongside Beaver Creek that provides endless hours of fun over the winter months.

Chris Howie has spent countless hours at the Lions Park Community Rink in Newmarket and the evidence is as clear as the pristine ice he makes each winter. Chris leads a strong group of volunteers to help create a great space for the community to gather and enjoy outdoor hockey. He runs a tight ship giving younger skaters an opportunity to try the game and get comfortable, then throughout the day, more age groups take the ice.

Every winter you can find Eric Reder working hard on both of the rinks he makes on and beside the Seine River. The setting couldn’t be more perfect tucked in amongst the trees on the river banks. After four winters of making a rink, Eric fine tunes the process each year, which leads to many hours of enjoying the game of hockey in nature.
